Welcome to Glens Falls Karate Academy’s Little Ninjas (Basic SKILLZ) Program!

This program was specifically designed to target the stages of development of kids 5 through 8 years old. Our Little Ninjas (Basic SKILLZ) Program Curriculum includes years of research and development proven effective for this age group. Our goal for our Little Ninjas (Basic SKILLZ) Program is to maximize the effectiveness of each child’s training with valuable lessons that will enhance their life for years to come.

Our Little Ninjas Program is a preliminary Martial Arts training course that focuses on building upon the capabilities of 5 through 8 year olds; physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectually. We call this program our “Basic” skills program because it will help each child properly develop the basic fundamental skills they are currently acquiring at this age. We do this by combining the art of karate with the science of education, and I am very confident in what our program will do for your child.

Children this age are in a unique growth period in their life. They are refined in their gross motor skills, while establishing a foundation in basic fundamental skills. These basic fundamental skills include: focus, teamwork, control, balance, memory, discipline, fitness, and coordination. In any other sport or activity, all of these 8 skills are important to have. The more exposure to proper development in each of these skills, the more thoroughly your child will develop. For this reason, we have tailored a 9-level training course that increases the intensity of each skill at every level.

In our Little Ninjas (Basic SKILLZ) Program, your child will train in an environment that is just right for them. They will train with other children their age, and not have to be limited or overwhelmed by younger and older students. Each class will accommodate every student’s skills and abilities in a way that is not overly demanding or intimidating, but still challenging enough to elicit growth. That means more age-specific instruction with better results. I guarantee it!

Again, welcome to our Little Ninjas (Basic SKILLZ) Program at Glens Falls Karate Academy!
Congratulations on making the decision to significantly enhance your child’s growth and development. Not only do we guarantee that your child will benefit from their training, we also guarantee they will have a lot of fun in the process!

Introduction to the Little Ninjas Program

This program was designed to target age-specific skills for children between the ages of 5 and 8 years old. Its purpose is to introduce basic skills based training to the early elementary age group, which has basic physical, intellectual, social, and emotional abilities. With that said, more emphasis is placed on building basic fundamental skills training with a strategic balance of Martial Arts.

Here’s a brief overview of how the program works:

  1. There are 8 basic skills that each student must develop continuously as they advance in rank.
  2. These 8 skills are taught individually so that a student training two times per week will work on all 8 skills over the course of four weeks.
  3. The rank evaluation cycle is a total of 16 weeks, 12 weeks to cover each skill three times with a week of review to ensure proper development before evaluation, two weeks for evaluation follow up, and one week for promotions and graduation ceremonies.
  4. The students’ goal is to develop the necessary challenges per skill.
  5. As the student accomplishes each skill requirement, the student will earn a skill stripe corresponding to the specific skill.
  6. The student’s goal is to collect all 8 skill stripes within the first 12 weeks of the testing cycle in order to test for the next rank.
  7. As each student earns their new belt, they will proceed to earn all 8 skills stripes based on the next belt requirements per their rank curriculum.
  8. Once the student’s reach the rank of White-Black belt, they will graduate from the Basic SKILLZ program and move on to the Core SKILLZ program.

The goal for the Little Ninjas (Basic SKILLZ) Program is to establish basic skills that are significant to a typical child between the ages of 5 and 8 years old. All students that graduate from this program are considered knowledgeable in the skills provided and therefore qualify to move onto a more advanced program. For more information about the next program, please see your child’s instructor or program director.

The Little Ninjas Belt Structure

There are a total of 8 belts in the Little Ninjas (Basic SKILLZ) Program. The belts are also broken down into 2 experience levels: beginner and intermediate. At each rank students will work to develop 8 age specific skills, for which they will earn skill stripes upon completion of specific challenges at each rank. When a student has earned all 8 skill stripes at their current rank, they are ready to move up to the next level of challenges (colored belt) and receive the next level of challenges to continue developing their skills.

Below is a breakdown of the Lil’ Dragon (Early SKILLZ) belt and stripe curriculum:

The belts are broken down into 2 experience levels: beginner and intermediate.

Also, each experience level has its own set of colors to distinguish the students level of experience. This is a tool that instructors use to properly challenge students based on their ability, as well as promote goal setting for their students.

By understanding the stages of development of 5 through 8 year olds, we were able to select 8 age-appropriate skills that make up our Little Ninjas (Basic SKILLZ) curriculum:

  1. FOCUS
  2. TEAMWORK
  3. CONTROL
  4. MEMORY
  5. BALANCE
  6. DISCIPLINE
  7. FITNESS
  8. COORDINATION

We cover one of the above skills per class (in order). During each class we run a warm-up; deliver a mat chat about the skill; run two or three skill-building drills; and then we have them demonstrate the skill to earn their skill-stripe. They must earn all 8 skill-stripes in order to graduate to the next belt level. Once they earn their next belt they will continue to run through all 8 skills earning their skill-stripes with a more challenging curriculum as they advance to each rank. They graduate to the Core SKILLZ Program after they have successfully completed all 9-belt ranks of the Basic SKILLZ program.

As you can see we take Martial Arts training to a whole new level!

We use basic elements of traditional Martial Arts curriculums to build skills that are appropriate for 5 through 8 year olds. This means that your child will learn and grow at a pace that is not too easy, nor too challenging. The best part is our Basic SKILLZ Program will equip your child with skills that they will utilize in every area of their life!

How to make the most out of your child’s Little Ninjas training

Each and every child who participates in the Little Ninjas Program walks away with knowledge and education that will influence their life for years to come. It is our commitment to teach your child in the best, most positive environment possible. At home, it is up to you to encourage them and support them the best you can.

Here are some tips for you to review with your child to help make the most out of their training:

  1. Reinforce training at home:
It’s only when a child practices more than usual that they appreciate and recognize their hard work.
  2. Attend their classes regularly:
When you support their effort and motivation, they try harder.
  3. Don’t allow them to be late to class:
Tardiness will make them feel uncomfortable, and teaches bad manners.
  4. Discourage consistent absences:
Consistency and commitment will be one of the best lessons your child learns.
  5. Reward their achievements:
When you recognize their accomplishments, they are more inclined to continue accomplishing.
  6. Help them set consistent goals:
The more they shoot for, the more they will achieve.

These tips prove to be invaluable to a child’s growth and development. In a world competitive to capture your child’s attention, our Little Ninjas Program does so in a way that will greatly influence their childhood. Congratulations for again making the decision that will support your child’s future!
